Bird nest custody arrangements. We’re not suggesting that the tabloids are the best information sources. However, if the New York Post wants to report on bird nesting, perhaps it’s something we should discuss.
We’re also not exactly sure why this custody arrangement is suddenly called a new trend. It’s been around for some time. If you’re in suspense because you can’t figure it out, read on.
What is Bird nesting?
In today’s blog edition, we introduce you to Mia and Angelo Forte. They live in the suburbs of Northern New Jersey. Their two children are both under the age of five.
Angelo takes responsibility for the divorce. He travels to Florida frequently for business. It became cost effective for him to buy a second home outside Tampa. It was there that he met the sultry blonde who caught his eye. You get where the story is headed.
Mia found out that the Florida trips were more than business meetings. The two sought marriage counseling, but reconciliation did not seem an option. They agreed that divorce was the only alternative.
It didn’t seem fair to Mia to uproot the children from the house. Angelo agreed. He would let Mia stay in the house. He also had another suggestion.
What if the kids stayed in the house and he and Mia rotated out? Mia could take off to Florida for a vacation. Or, she could visit her sister or mother for a few days. Angelo felt so guilty he would even buy her another home locally.
The idea behind bird nesting is that the children’s lives aren’t interrupted. They get to stay in their home. With their toys. Surrounded by their friends. Eventually in their school. The only thing that changes is whether mom or dad is in residence.
Of course, the practicality of such an arrangement will include the following:
- Both parties must have an alternative place to stay
- Guidelines must be set up as far as privacy
- Financial feasibility must be a consideration
- Partnership relationships with others must be evaluated
- The parties must be able to co-exist on some level
